Tungnath Temple

2. Mythology about Tungnath:

There is a widespread legend associated with the Indian epic, called “Mahabharata”, and the famous Pandava family. It is believed by folklore that following the major Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas wanted to offer atonement for any wrongs or abuse they had done. 

It is said that they met an unhappy God who had turned himself into a bull and was trying to escape in Garhwal. Nevertheless, the Pandavas wanted to trace him which finally led us to his disguise but it was Bhima who found the hidden Shiva. 

So, this is what Shiva did as a reaction. He plunged down into the ground and left himself with his hump behind at Tungnath. Tungnath is the location where the hump is supposed to have manifested.

Legend has it that the temple was built by Pandavas in commemoration of Lord Shiva’s sanctification and piousness.
